چکیده

The sandy substrate of Lake Taharoa (west coast, North Island, New Zealand 35°50'S, 173°41'E) is covered by communities of filamentous algae that extend from the exposed beach down to 21 m depth. The algae bind the sand to form crusts and mats which may break off as discrete plates. The dominant species are the blue-greens Microcoleus, Nostoc, Phormidium, Lyngbya, Oscillatoria, Scytonema, Stigonema, Shizothrix, Calothrix, Dichothrix, Tolypothrix, and Anabaena, with occasional high concentrations of the desmid Cylindrocystis. Nitrogenase activity, measured by acetylene reduction, showed a wide range of rates (4-150 μmol C2H4 m h ). Estimates of annual rates of nitrogen fixation by the Taharoa communities are comparable with those for periphytic blue-green algae-dominated systems reported elsewhere.

Factors influencing dark nitrogen fixation in a blue-green alga.

Nitrogen-fixing activity declines first rapidly and then more gradually when Anabaenopsis circularis is transferred from light into dark conditions. The rate and duration of dark acetylene reduction (nitrogen fixation) depend upon conditions prevailing during the preceding light period. Factors (such as light intensity, CO2 concentration, and supply of glucose), which in the light affect photos...

Nitrogen fixation by thermophilic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria): temperature characteristics and potential use in biophotolysis.

Thermophilic, nitrogen-fixing, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) were investigated for use in biophotolysis. Three strains of Mastigocladus laminosus were tested and were found to be equally effective in biophotolysis as judged by nitrogenase activity. The alga, M. laminosus NZ-86-m, which was chosen for further study, grew well in the temperature range from 35 to 50 degrees C, with optimum grow...

Study of soil blue-green algae and their effect on seed germination and plant growth of vegetable crops

Nitrogen fixation blue-green algae make a major contribution to the fertility of soil. It has been suggested that blue-green algae (BGA) assist higher plant growth by supplying growth substances. There are numerous works about roles of blue-green algae in paddy soils and rice growth but little on other plants. In this research, 19 morphospecies belonging to three families of heterocystous and n...

Azolla filiculoides Nitrogenase Activity Decrease Induced by Inoculation with Chlamydomonas sp.

Experiments were conducted to determine the influence of Chlamydomonas sp. on nitrogen fixation (C(2)H(2) --> C(2)H(4)) in Azolla filiculoides and on the nitrogen fixation and growth of free-living Anabaena azollae 2B organisms. Inoculation of azolla medium with Chlamydomonas sp. was associated with decreased nitrogenase activity in A. filiculoides and with increases in the density of a fungal ...
